Manual tester vs automation engineer cost
How the cost of a manual QA engineer compares with a test automation engineer: which lines differ, which are the same, and one dataset comparison.

A manual QA engineer and a test automation engineer in the same country carry the same statutory rates, so the difference in their total cost starts in base salary. A manual QA engineer designs and runs tests by hand; a test automation engineer writes code that runs tests. The worked example compares the two at the same level and country where both are published.
Role definitions
The role taxonomy on the roles page defines each role by the work it does:
- Manual QA engineer. Designs and executes test cases by hand, reports and verifies defects.
- Test automation engineer. Builds and maintains automated UI and API test suites in a test framework.
Each salary source row records the exact job title and level label from the source, so the match between a source and a role can be checked on the breakdown page. A role and level without at least two matching sources in a country is not published for that country.
Worked example
Worked example: Germany, at senior level. Manual QA engineer: EUR 77,312; test automation engineer: EUR 90,783. Statutory rates are identical for both, so the gap starts in base salary (EUR 57,793 against EUR 66,785) and carries through contributions, recruiting and ramp.

Lines that follow salary
Most lines in the formula scale with base salary, so a salary gap carries through:
- Employer contributions apply statutory rates to salary, up to any cap. Above a cap, the gap in contributions narrows.
- Mandatory benefits such as an extra month of salary are a fixed fraction of salary.
- Recruiting is a percentage of salary.
- Ramp is valued from weekly cost, which includes salary.
Lines that do not follow salary
- Equipment and tooling depends on the role's item list, not on salary. Both roles carry a laptop, a test management licence and an issue tracker licence. The automation role also carries one parallel session on a cloud browser and device grid, which runs automated tests on remote browsers. See the equipment guide.
- Voluntary benefits come from surveys by country and level; where a survey gives an amount instead of a percentage, it is the same for both roles.
Ramp length
The formula sets ramp weeks by level, not by role. A mid-level manual tester and a mid-level automation engineer have the same ramp weeks under the defaults. The ramp cost differs only because weekly cost differs.
When the comparison is not published
The comparison needs both roles published at the same level in the same country. Where one is below the publication threshold, the example reads "not published" and the reasons are on the not-published page.
Hourly and model comparisons
For contractor and outsourced figures, rates are aggregated per role and region, so the gap between the two roles may differ from the employee gap. The compare page shows the models side by side.
