Time to hire a QA engineer
Time-to-hire benchmarks in the dataset, what they measure, and how the daily cost of a QA role puts a scale on the wait, with one worked example.
Figures from dataset v1.0, computed . Updated .
Time to hire is the number of days between opening a role and a candidate accepting the offer. The dataset holds time-to-hire benchmarks as a range from the lowest benchmark figure to the highest, with the median of the figures; they are general hiring benchmarks, not QA-specific. The worked example sets that range next to the daily cost of one QA role, so the wait can be read in the same currency as the budget.
What time to hire measures
Benchmarks use slightly different start and end points. The common definition runs from the day a role is opened or advertised to the day the offer is accepted. It does not include the notice period before the new hire starts, or the ramp after they start. Each benchmark source states its definition, and the dataset keeps the source with the figure.
The range runs from the lowest to the highest figure the benchmark sources report, and the median is the median of those figures. Some of the figures are medians and others are averages, as each source reports them.
Worked example
The dataset uses time-to-hire benchmarks from 34 days, the lowest benchmark figure, to 44 days, the highest, with a median of 38 days; they are not QA-specific. For a mid-level manual QA engineer in the United States, the role's total annual cost comes to USD 294 per calendar day, which puts a scale on the median wait.
Confidence grade (A, B or C, from the number and agreement of the sources): mid-level manual QA engineer in the United StatesConfidence B.

The daily figure is the fully loaded annual cost divided by calendar days. It is a scale, not a cost the employer pays during the vacancy: while a role is empty, no salary is paid. What the employer carries during the wait is the QA work not done, and the dataset does not price that.
The full timeline
From opening a role to full productivity, three periods follow each other:
- Time to hire. From opening to offer acceptance. Benchmarks are in the dataset.
- Notice period. From acceptance to start date. It depends on the candidate's current contract and country law; the dataset does not estimate it.
- Ramp. From start date to full productivity. The formula defaults are 10 weeks for a junior, 6 for a mid-level and 4 for a senior hire.
Only the third period has a cost line in the formula. The onboarding ramp guide covers it.
Why the benchmarks are not QA-specific
The two-source rule applies to time to hire as to every other figure. The benchmarks that meet it in the current dataset cover hiring in general, not QA roles alone, so the figure is labelled as a general benchmark. A QA-specific figure would replace it only when two sources support it, and the change would appear in the dataset version on the data page.
Time to hire and recruiting cost
The formula applies the agency fee as a percentage of base salary, so the recruiting line does not change with the length of the search. The recruiting fees guide explains how the fee is applied.
